Observation details
Initially I counted individuals in a flock that came in in response to mobbing recordings. All were female-types, except for one adult male. The female-types were crisply marked with dark streaks, had bold white supercilia, very distinct malars. The male was purple-red all over, reddest underneath and most purply on the back. The wings were distinctly red-purple. All birds were larger than adjacent Goldfinches, and had distinctively forked tails. Responded to playback of Purple finch song. I then queued into the calls, and realized that there were Purple Finches scattered throughout the forest, including at least 4 adult males and an approximately equal number of female-types in a loose flock with House Finches along the edge of the forest adjacent to the soccer fields.
