Observation details
First winter at Thompson fish dock. Was with herring gulls on the piers just east of the boat ramp. It was perched for 15 minutes but then flew off. However I think it was quite happy in the area so will likely be back. Larger than herring with heavy all black bill. Pink legs. White head. Light underparts with some dusky wash on belly. Back dark with very distinctive black and white checkerboard appearance due to the dark (almost black) juvenile feathers with broad crisp white edges. Tertials on sitting bird were black with very contesting white feather tips. Primaries black. Tail and rump white with narrow black band along tail tip only. I'm flight upper parts all dark, no pale panels as in immature herring. Photographed in great detail. John Berner and drew Dickert also photographed the bird.
