Observation details
***Rare. Continuing female found earlier this morning by Jim Pawlicki, seen immediately to the west of the wooden docks/fishing pier (32.9139316, -117.0999958), loosely associating with the Lesser Scaup and American Coots. An impressive ID by Jim, but with favorable viewing conditions many identification traits became apparent including its darker chestnut back and neck, dark mantle sharply delineated from its flanks, brown sides and brownish flanks with white below them, square-shaped head with a little tuft, bright yellow eye, blue bill with a big black nail, and no white at the base of its bill. A California state bird for NRG and a San Diego county bird for TFH. Many photos taken.
