Media notes
This male quail, one of two birds seen together, and representing a male of either Gambel's Quail or possibly a Gambel's × California Quail hybrid, was photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 5 April 2022 along the western edge of Clark Dry Lake, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California. We saw these birds only briefly, so I was unable to see anything more than what is shown in these photos, and I saw the second bird only as a fast-moving quail, so I was not even sure of its sex.
Observation details
Either Gambel's or California x Gambel's. Bright rufous crown.
