Observation details
Flew by as i was arriving. Cal gull size w dark back, white rump and dark tailband. No white mirror in inner primaries. Saw in flight then quickly switched to getting photos, which are all backlit. Looking at photos, it looks like a third cycle as it has a pale base to bill. Views brief and will review photos. Photos show back and upperpart pattern consistent w lessback but head and breast look weird and vaguely california-like Edit 4/3 upon uploading photos: Diven the bill pattern I could see, poorly, in the photos in the field I was wondering if this genuinely was a LessBack or if I screwed it up, but the photos do appear consistent with a third-cycle of the species, the only plumage with a pale bill base and dark tip like this. The white head is weird and somewhat concerning, but I'll just have to write that off as individual variation
