Observation details
I spotted this Upland Sandpiper just a few metres away as it foraged in the grass along the roadside. I immediately recognized it and had an excellent view, but unfortunately as I grabbed my camera, a dog flushed it and it flew over the fence into the large grassy fields. I searched the fields but could not find it again. This was a distinctive medium-sized shorebird with an upright posture, a longish neck; medium-long straight yellowish bill; and yellow legs. It was sandy-brown in colour with a slightly darker patterned back, and paler whitish undersides, lightly barred along the sides. In flight the notably darker outer primaries contrasted with the rest of the brownish wing. The tail was also brownish and appeared rather long in flight. The eBird App flagged it as rare so I texted Domi Alveo right away as I knew he was in Meteti. Upland Sandpiper is a species I know very well as it nests near my home in northwestern Canada. Edit: editing my photos I discovered that I did get identifiable, documentary-photos of the Upland Sandpiper as it flew over the fence.
