Observation details
We both believe that the repetitive nasally, questioning calls that we heard from about 20 feet up in the trees to our left (when walking downhill) in trees near the stream was a pair of Northern Pygmy Owls. We first heard of them about 200 yards uphill from a grove of oaks known as the Old Boy Scout Camp (It did not occur to me to obtain GPS coordinates which I now regret in retrospect). I obtained recordings at that location but the mob of birds and mammals that we believe were harassing the owls were louder than the owls to the point where I can’t even hear them on my recordings (which I’m going to keep just in case). Fortunately, when we were much closer to the Old Boy Scout Camp the owls started calling again, and this time while I did succeed at obtaining two recordings of them the louder birds and mammals [Band tailed pigeons, Mountain Quail, Merriam‘s Chipmunk, Western Gray Squirrel, etc.] that are closer again outcompeted the owls hours for space on the recordings (I don’t know if this is an electronic problem or the inability of the human brain to discriminate between the further quieter sound and the closer louder sound). Hiking down to this location from the parking lot is not for the faint of heart.
