Observation details
Heard single low Hoo. About 8 seconds apart - past the tower going counterclockwise. A second one hooing from near the visitors center. 8:35 saw one on ground. Very white belly and front of wings. Dark wings. Walked slowly but deliberately away - never flew. Saw 3-4 times between the brush. Just up the steep hill - took the trail to the right. Bad video added -- shows three things: 1) the behavior of the dove on the ground; 2) the difficulty in actually seeing it: and 3) the tendency of it to switch direction. It did not go in straight directions but doubled back. It popped out where I did not expect it --each time saw it. Tip - walk very slowly. Five steps then wait… five steps again. If you do see it - stop and wait…. And wait. Patrick who works at the sanctuary said - if it is calling it will be up. If it is on the ground - it will not be calling.
