Observation details
5 Primary fingers?. Typical tail band pattern to European. Underwing inner barring disappear under coverts before reaching body. Dark carpal patches not very prominent due to dark morph bird and poor lighting conditions, but see enhanced photo. [Also a very similar looking bird here: https://macaulaylibrary.org/photo/176504501 Note how the carpal patch is not clear on the wing which is under poor light] Lack dark gular patch. Compact build. Thin underwing barring suggest female. Some juv. primaries and secondaries still remaining, so a 2CY bird. The indistinct carpal patches and round wings raised the possibility of a hybrid. Following are comments by experts. Comment by Dick Forsman: "Hi Moditha, Thanks for image again. A female indeed, but this time it looks more like a hybrid. The wings are too broad and square for a EHB and the lack of dark carpal patch but instead very dark greater primary coverts indicate hybrid origin. Clearly this bird does not fit either species neatly. Probably a 2nd winter bird, with outer primaries and some secs still juv feathers. Best wishes" Comments by Dr. Yoav Perlman "Hi Moditha, Thanks for reaching out. This bird feels like a hybrid to me. Sixth finger half-developed. Wings quite rectangular but not very broad, also body quite slim. Indeed, barring on underwing and tail pattern are better for European HB but not perfect, at least not underwing barring. Best, Yoav"
