Observation details
I heard an unfamiliar call, then found the bird at the top of cottonwood. Angle of view made and height of bird made it difficult to tell if it had an eye line or narrow mask. Overall impression, however, was of a shrike. Bright light made it difficult to tell if the light breast was scaly (photos revealed it was). From the underside, the dark tail had large white patches. Merlin Sound ID had difficulty picking up the calls but eventually suggested Northern Shrike, confirming my suspicion. Interestingly, two Blue Jays flew in to the tree above the shrike and very near. They vocalized softly moving around the shrike, generally above or beside it and quite close. The shrike appeared unperturbed and the jays eventually flew off. Photos and recording to come.
