Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) Three Pines Bird Sanctuary MDI Dec 13 2016 MJGood
Observation details
One male Pileated Woodpecker eating Winterberry's behind the house. Fruit is one important winter food along with grubs and other insects. It was fortuitous that I caught this event on film. Winterberry (holly) (Ilex verticillata) is a deciduous shrub that is available to birds in late fall with winter persistent fruits This hardy shrub is tolerant of wet conditions and can be found in abundance this season. The scarlet red berries are important food for winter resident birds and here we see them being eaten by this resident adult male. The berries are borne on female plants only attracting American Robins, Eastern Bluebirds, Cedar and Bohemian Waxwings and Pileated Woodpecker.
