Observation details
Medium sized diving duck in the vicinity of common goldeneye. Very clean, plain buffy cheek forming a clean division with a dark brown cap. The bill was dark, uniform and thinner than the bills on the goldeneye. The bird was well lit with bright light and was viewed with a high quality spotting scope for about 10 minutes. It was diving in shallow water foraging off the bottom. It appear to be bringing vegetation from the bottom. I considered ruddy duck but the cheek did not present any hint of a line and the tail was never raised. I also considered bufflehead but the bird was too large and there was no hint of a light patch on the cheek. Unfortunately, I was unable to take a photograph. Note: see William Gray’s list #S104461915. He has photographed what is likely the same bird in the same location (screen shot of Will’s photo included ). Yeah Will!
