Observation details
These were CHRA but given that my recordings are not usable due to wind I'm putting them as sp. I figure if I saw an out of range CHRA report in NW New Mexico come through the que I probably won't accept it without documentation. 2 groups of birds about a 1/4 mile apart in ag fields. The birds immediately struck me as CHRA being small, short-tailed, and short-billed. I pulled over to get recordings and head a couple birds giving typical croaking calls. Interestingly this is now the 4th group of CHRA or suspected CHRA I have seen this winter in this region. The others being in McKinley, Cibola, and northern Catron Counties in NM. After spending quite some time going though all extralimital records in NM and purging most of them I was left with a couple of seemingly reliable reports from the region. I'm curious to know if this is a recent phenomenon, an irregular seasonal movement, or a northward expansion. I'll definitely be paying more attention to flocks of ravens in the area going forward and hopefully will be able to get some decent recordings before too long.
