Observation details
Two birds reported from Kawawa Beach, Attikamagen Lake. Naskapi hunters shot one. Photos from the bird taken a few hours after the hunt suggest a Trumpeter Swan. The photos were examined by Michel Gosselin (bird specialist retired from the Canadian Museum of Nature) who come to the same conclusion based on the following characteristics: there is no narrowing of the plumage in front of the eye; no yellow on the bill; the culmen is fairly straight; the front of the forehead more pointed than round; the cheek border is straight; pink on the lower mandible. Note: Photos show a deformation of the upper mandible to the left. (Photos of specimen taken by Conrad André with the permission of hunters to help with identification, photo of live bird published on facebook by hunting party). Interesting sighting of two individuals one year and 4 months after the report of one (possibly two) Trumpeter Swan on Bazile Lake, Caniapiscau, Québec, only 54 km to the SW on June 8, 2020 (eBird report S98745412). Report written by Bruno Drolet, Canadian Wildlife Service, Québec region, on February 21, 2022.
