Observation details
Duplicate from a previously submitted checklist; this checklist was made specifically to incorporate this record into the atlas. This was clearly a family group, with two calling/singing adults, one confirmed young bird, and two more presumed young birds. Some additional details for this high-priority atlas species: First identified by call--a series of three notes that all sounded like the first note of the song: "quick-quick-quick!" The adults sang occasionally (quick-three-beers!), while the three young birds continued to make the call. ID was confirmed visually by the black vest, white tufts of feathers below the wings when relaxed or in flight, and behavior of sitting at the tops of dead snags. Separated from juvenile waxwing and Eastern Wood-Pewee by habitat, call and song, high contrast between dark flanks and white belly, lack of striking wing bars, short tail, and large, defined dark spots on undertail coverts. Location: 46.17876 N, 89.32365 W Habitat: A large, fairly recently-logged upland forest over barren, sandy soil, and bordering two boreal spruce-tamarack bogs. The understory consisted of aspen, birch, and fir saplings. The area had been selectively logged, so the "canopy" featured all of the spruce trees which had been left behind, as well as a fair number of tall, dead snags interspersed throughout. Habitat code: SUCc
