Observation details
The Sand-Plover!!! The term "gentle giant" might as well have been created for this bird; it was an absolute joy to watch as it toddled about with that truly unique gait, inching along on slow, tiny steps, occasionally crouching down like a Camel on those fantastic, grey-green stilt-legs!! The big, beautiful eye... the massive bill like a Roman gladius, sloping perfectly down from the forehead... the aforementioned stilt-legs, almost impossibly slim and long... I simply cannot understand the many detractors of the Greater's appearance; I genuinely think it is up there with the Curlew and the Golden Plover for the most pleasingly shaped Waders, and of the three birds I would say it is far and away the most satisfying on the eye!!! I also found the subtle two-tone colouration, slightly colder toned yet no less vibrant than the Double-Banded, to be extremely subtle and handsome... what a special bird to travel so far and search so long for!!!
