Observation details
White cheeked geese, smaller overall than CANG, shorter necks, stubbier bill, dark breast, white neck collar. I expected the calls to be similar to CANG only slightly higher. That seems to ring true. Here, the cackling call starts at 7.0sec of the recording. It starts at roughly 2k, having essentially no sound below that. By comparison, the CANG call below starts well below 1k. In addition, the overtones in the cackling call are more spread out. In the call at 7.0sec, there are 6 tones within the range of 2k to 8k. The CANG call has 9-10 tones in that same frequency range. That characteristic makes the CACG call just a touch “clearer” and the CANG call just a touch “honkier”. Note that there are a few CANG calls in this recording, and the tighter overtones is possibly the easiest way to pick them out. There are two calls at :21 where the overtones are closer together. Several more at :28.
