Observation details
Incredible looks at a male perched on a hanging vine right by the road. We heard the whistled two-part call, and I thought it might be a hawk, but there was no mistaking this beautiful green and orange bird when we turned the corner and saw him sitting 15' away. Male because of the tiny white throat patch. Otherwise bright rufous-orange below, green head and green tail and back. Very big black bill. The green back caught the light, dazzling gold, green, bronze, and blue-green. Very large. Swift acrobatic flycatching sallies, snapping the bill violently against some ludicrously mis-matched insect and bringing it back to delicately dismantle and consume on his perch. Lifer!!
