Observation details
Fascinating encounter! Two chachalacas at first seen together somewhat distant in the top of a tree, precisely where Alf Auerbach, who we ran into in the field, had told us he had seen them earlier. One was an obvious White-bellied, and at first we assumed its companion to also be White-bellied. However, as we did playback for both White-bellied and Plain Chachalaca, this pair came closer and it became obvious that they were a mixed pair! Other chachalacas—all Plain—soon emerged and a scream fest ensued. While this was going on, JVD was positive that he could hear the difference in vocalization between White-bellied and Plain. White-bellied Chachalaca vocalization in direct comparison is very similar to Plain, but appears to be slightly more complex, with more notes in the final cadence. Lots of photos of the mixed pair together; where one went, the other always followed, and the birds were never more than 1-2 m from each other.
