Observation details
Great bird, very rare here. Not a lifer for me, but new subspecies (I saw the Mexican ssp in Oaxaca in 2017). We were searching for the antpitta, when I saw a huge campephilus-sized rufous brown bird swoop down and land on a tree trunk. I saw the large curved black bill and obvious dark malar mark and called out Strong-billed! We were able to view a pair as they foraged in the area, twice perching on a tree trunk, legs splayed out at 45° angle as they rested on their tail bristles, for an extended period of time.
