Observation details
2 offshore, 4 pelagic. At least 3 of these looked very sickly, sitting low in water with head at low angle. The Northern Giant Petrel at the berley point swam over to one of these birds that was drifting nearby, killed it, rolled it on its belly and ripped a few feathers out before swimming away to leave the uneaten carcass. Suggestion is these birds are all juveniles in poor condition having recently fledged. One that was picked up onshore at the same time was certainly a juvenile in very fresh plumage.
