Observation details
One at coordinates: 32.23858, -99.87877. There to five at coordinates: 32.23808, -99.88249. a flock of 16 or possibly even a couple more at coordinates: 32.23395, -99.88192. Lance photographed this species here last weekend. I assume that some of the birds I saw earlier were the same birds I saw later in the larger flock. Hard to know. It could be that there are even more individuals here at the park. While I was not able to get any photographs (I was lazy and the camera was in the car), I did manage one or two recordings of a bird calling. I saw the birds very well. The males had scalloped feathers on the back and breast. The females were especially distinct, mini having very rusty brown backs and black lores with a prominent buffy supercilium. The last few winters, this species seems to have taken advantage of the large trees and wet forest floor along the creek. That habitat was especially prevalent today with all of the snow melt. The large flock that I saw was coming down to the roadside edge in a campground where the melting snow yielded wet and muddy conditions.
