Observation details
Others have reported a dull immature female at this location, typically associating with an adult male. I saw only the dull immature female. This bird was in the northern portion of the park. It was in the trees between the park road (Ward st) and the golf course, past the entrance kiosk but before you reach the nature area. It was chattering away as it moved through the trees. Overall size, bill shape, behavior, and the chattering call made it obvious this was an oriole. The lighting was overcast grey. Just not enough light to bring out subtle coloring in the birds, but enough light to turn overhead birds into silhouettes. This bird looked very drab, and much of that was due to poor lighting. Photos included, but they're poor photos due to the lighting conditions. That all said… It looked to have a subtle olive tint to its head. The back was grey with white wing bars. The breast and belly appeared plain off white. The plain nature of the head seems indicative of Baltimore. For bullocks, I’d expect a more colorful face. The uniform nature of the breast/belly seems indicative of Baltimore. With Bullocks, I’d expect a clear contrast between a colorful upper breast and white lower belly. This bird didn’t have that contrast. Those color characteristics lead me to think Baltimore. I was surprised by how little color the upper breast and undertail coverts showed. I suspect that was due to both the relative subtlety of this individual bird and the poor lighting conditions. The chatter call is at 1sec, 5.5sec, 8sec, 16sec, 18sec, 22sec, 37sec and 40sec of the recording.
