Observation details
Description: Small, eclipse/female duck – clearly a teal by shape and size. Distinctive facial pattern with dark eye, dark blob around eye, dark line from bill through eye to back of face, additional dark line from gape across cheek, light supercilium and upper throat. Dark gray bill. Overall brownish on breast, back, and scapulars, tertials edged in white. Behavior: Feeding in the surface film. Similar species? Distinctive facial pattern with two dark lines on face and the white tertial edging rule out other teal. I had it written down as an eclipse male, but it could have been a female. The Garganeys I have seen before and since were all in alternate plumage.
