🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 WHAT IS THIS INSANITY?? I heard about these birds this afternoon from liam who had them at the 149 pond. He advised me that the birds could be at these fields at dusk. So they were. All the birds (cranes geese and swans) were on a stubble field just to the west of highway 99. We pulled over on 99, because harter road was closed. The first bird I heard was a TRUS 🤣. A significant number of the birds were with heads down or behind the cranes so they were hard to count. I had 59, then 65. A few minutes later liam arrived when the cranes were leaving and he counted 77. This is more than 3 times the previous california high count (24, at modoc nwr in 2011). It was a great study of this often difficult species. They were giant compared to the many TUSW around, with broader, straight bills. Pretty sure i saw one with some pale (whitish patch) on the base of the bill, which was cool. Many were calling and I might have audio. They were pretty backlit, but the setting sun did make for a beautiful scene. Photos.
