Michelle Martin -- Smaller and shorter than Horned Grebe immediately next to it. Peak over eye. Grey neck.Thin up turned bill. Rounded back, riding higher in water than nearby Horned. Photos. Additional details -- Mark Gawn: Initially spotted at long range but noted smaller grebe with dusky cheeks, eventually better views as we approached more closely: in direct side by side comparison with Horned clearly smaller, with domed and or peaked head (depending on posture), more slender neck, body appeared shorted and back more domed than nearby Horned, bird sat higher on water than Horned. Often fluffed out whitish area towards rear. Neck dusky, contrasting with whitish throat and chin. Crown dark fading into dusky auriculars protruding into the cheeks, with whitish area wrapping up behind. Bill thinner than nearby Horned, lower mandible with distinct uptick at tip. Distant photos obtained.
