Observation details
Almost certainly 12-15+. At 4:15, while I was standing on the end of the boardwalk, one grunted and set off a chain reaction of just an incredible number of VIRA grunting in singles and pairs from all directions in numerous clusters throughout the marsh and lasting for 10 minutes. I have surveyed secretive marsh birds in my professional work, have rarely if ever heard so many VIRA sounding off from a stationary location, and am confident of a count of 12-15. One also “ticketing” from another location the entire time I was in the boardwalk area. All calling spontaneously (no playback).
