Observation details
Rare and highly secretive overwintering sparrow with large yellow-green head, maroon scallop pattern with pale fringes on back, and fine dark streaks on buffy flanks. Heard first, then flushed a few times before it settled into stationary position on and around a tree where our group was able to observe it in the open. Very minimal impact on habitat—our group of 10 or so was barely 20 feet off trail. In prime HESP habitat—Bahia grass with short blackberry plants interspersed and plentiful Andropogon/bushy bluestem all around. Extensive photos and video recorded, photos to be added ASAP. Possibly two observed. Thanks to Rex Rowan and any others who mentioned that this location has produced HESP in prior years.
