Observation details
Small finch, roughly the size of a chickadee, seen actively foraging in the small pine cones of the section of taller, more mature alder trees along the dam pathway (39.873062, -86.306105) It vocalized the "nasal" call a little bit in between om-nom-noms on cones, and also did a flight call when it flew from tree to tree; similar to goldfinch "twee" and "potato chip" calls but harsher. Thick wing bar, and small pointy, cone-shaped yellow bill. Limited black chin patch under bill with some black between the bill and eyes. Red round patch on forehead. Streaked back and flanks. No pink wash on the breast of this this individual, though (female or imm. male?). Bird flew north and disappeared out of view. It could still be around, so it's still worth looking here.
