Observation details
These birds were apparently concentrated here due to the high rate of water discharge from the dam. I learned from Valley Water fisheries ecologists that during high releases, small fish such as inland silversides and threadfin shad can be killed or injured while being entrained in water passing through the outlet, so these mergansers were apparently feeding on those fish.
