Observation details
*** Third documented for NV! The location has been obscured at request of land owner, Kristin Newman, who originally found the bird on 1/5/2022 and reported it on the Birding NV facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/BirdingNevada/posts/4970333123032320/. It was roosting in her yard (full of conifers) today. To chase this bird, contact her via Facebook Messenger. BACKGROUND NOTES: When the Fly Geyser area bird was reported a few months ago, facebook user Dan Moore reported having had "five of those brown eyed buggers that keep me awake at night near the mouth of Jumbo above Scripps" (Source: https://www.facebook.com/groups/BirdingNevada/posts/4810680652330902/?comment_id=4815517325180568 ) This location is a short flight away from that location, which is certainly interesting! It would be worth doing some systematic owling in New Washoe City area during Feb - April to see if this bird sticks around and/or more than one bird is present in the area. Checking elsewhere in Washoe Valley wouldn't be a bad idea either. As far as I know, there are no state/federal plans in place for managing Barred Owl in NV as part of Spotted Owl management, but if they begin breeding in Washoe Valley there might be an interest in at monitoring them. Another possibility is that this bird is a recent arrival to NV, or one of the two prior Washoe County observations. Who knows!
