Observation details
While scanning the river, I picked up what I initially thought was a Bonaparte's Gull. After closer examination as the bird drifted a little closer, I noticed a dark black collar at the base of the neck, dark bill, and a large smudge behind the eye. The bird eventually took off and the dark "M" pattern on the back, white window pains, clean underwing and black tail tip were all noted. Immature/ 1st Winter bird. The bird was a fair distance out in the river but viewing conditions were pretty nice given the time of the year and even on the water we were able to pick out the collar easily. The river was pretty calm and the wind was almost non-existent. When the bird got up, it did make it's way closer giving those of us with a scope much clearer looks. Having not encountered one inland before, I tried everything in my power to make this a Bonaparte's Gull and without the help of Anthony and Bruce who grabbed some documentation photos this was going to be a tough one to explain. The bird was first seen at 2:49 and got up at 3:05. Not sure which way it flew. Bruce and Anthony will upload photos, thanks guys!! 5th record for Dutchess County, first on eBird.
