Observation details
Perched north of playground, eating male House Sparrow. The coloration looked different than those I've observed lately. Kimball kindly provided feedback on this interesting individual, "I agree with you that this looks a bit darker than a typical richardsoni. On the other hand, it is certainly at the pale end for columbarius (which is a highly variable subspecies, spanning almost the continuum of phenotypes from dark extreme richardsoni to pale-extreme suckleyi. Factoring in also the intergradation that occurs at subspecies boundaries, and I wonder if it is wise to put a subspecies name on this bird. Both richardsoni and columbarius have expanded their breeding ranges in recent decades, and I suspect that intergradation is frequent."
