Observation details
Two by sewage works. First heard calling before we'd got out of the car. We walked along the northern perimeter fence of the site and eventually tracked down a calling bird to an isolated Hawthorne where it remained, calling regularly for about 5 minutes - sonogram on Recording 1 shows a flat call given at constant frequency. Despite the small size of the Hawthorne and its lack of leaves this bird was remarkably difficult to see, it was presumably remaining stationary for much of this time. When it did show it was a mackintosh-toned chiffchaff, lacking greens, yellows and greys - just appeared dull, drab and featureless, though James picked up on an indistinct wing-bar on the greater coverts that I didn't. After this a second bird began to call and seemed to be coming towards the first. In response, the calling intensity and calling frequency noticeably increased and the birds appeared to be in close proximity and moving - Recording 2 - one call slightly varies in frequency while the frequency of the other remains pretty flat - not certain which bird is calling, or whether both are in the recording. Despite this, we spectacularly failed to see any movement from either bird throughout this interaction so the second bird remained unseen. Both then fell silent and we lost them, though later we did hear one calling from a patch of evergreens within the compound.
