Observation details
Very rare in Region 7 along Lake Champlain. Third overall record for Essex County and first December record of the species (in eBird). Historically far more rare than Tufted Duck, which is also in this checklist. Apparent immature drake lacking fully developed alternate plumage, but nonetheless distinctive in appearance. Relatively small, compact diving duck which stayed in close proximity to rocky shoreline just north of the campground. Striking plumage with distinct white dot on side of head and broad white patch at base of bill. Thin vertical line forming along rear sides of head. Photos.
