Media notes
Poor iPhone audio with heavy high pass filter to filter out distracting amount of wind noise.
Observation details
Rarely reported in winter months locally with recent high/out of season numbers probably a combined result of a generally mild season so far with no deep freezes locally plus a few cooperative Virginia Rails at the GSNWR overlook in Nov-Dec that has motivated a stronger than average effort to look for rails recently; minimum of 3 birds giving clapper calls (grunt series) and 1 bird, likely one of the grunters, giving squeaky, staccato “kikikik” calls; terrible iPhone audio of grunting (probably not useable) and poor iPhone audio of staccato calls (probably usable). Given the mild season, today's mild weather, the number of Virginia Rail that are attempting to overwinter at the nearby GSNWR, and additionally, the lack of waterfowl so far today, I decided to walk out into the largest marsh in my section of this CBC territory for a stationary count of returning waterfowl and hopefully marsh birds (location here: 40.8310267, -74.3845312). From about 4:20pm - 5:15pm I counting waterfowl flying in to roost and listened for marsh birds while periodically using playback of Virginia Rail (grunts) and Sora (primarily whinny calls). I also pished for Marsh Wren without success (don’t understand why they are so scarce on this section of the Boonton CBC yet regular in the GSNWR marshes for the Great Swamp CBC).
