Male giving the loud wren like call on the river
Observation details
Up there with one of my favourite birds I have seen. No sign at first light then the loud rattle call started up below us on the river bank, and then it flew by. This caused mass panic and excitement!! It then perched up some big trees and sat much higher than Common Kingfisher, sometimes c40ft above water. During the next hour or two it caught a total of three Perch. One stage it landed in a small overhanging willow next to the water and it looked truly stunning as it swallowed the reasonable sized fish. It then proceeded to fly 100m up river but in this flight, it splashed into the water with no real aim, almost just flopping. Its wingbeats were also incredibly laboured and slow. It looked absolutely awesome in flight. Male still present on river, showing ridiculously well and calling at close range.
