Media notes
Northern Rough-winged Swallow photographed in flight by Curtis A. Marantz on 16 December 2021 along the Whitewater River, north end Salton Sea, Riverside County, California.
Observation details
Dean spotted this bird flying over the Johnson Street canal where it crossed under the levee road. I heard this bird call once, giving a sputtering "brrrt," but we saw it well. It was a relatively small swallow with a square-tipped tail and broad based wings that tapered to pointed tips. The upperparts were entirely a warm, dark brown and lacking contrast, but the underparts contrasted dingy brownish on the throat, breast, and sides with white on the belly and flanks/ This bird perched briefly atop a nearby snag, but it flew before I could get close enough to get a photo. I did manage to get a few photos of the bird in flight.
