Observation details
This large-billed duck was blackish overall except for two diffuse, white spots on each side of the face. The plumage was a rather uniform blackish-brown color overall, with the crown and upper nape being noticeably blacker, giving it the appearance of wearing a dark cap. One white spot was behind and below the eye, the other near the base of the bill. We were able to rule out White-winged Scoter only after it preened, stretched, and dove while showing no white in the secondaries. Later, in better light and a shorter viewing distance we were better able to see the size and shape of the white facial spots and the darker crown, also confirming that this bird was a Surf Scoter.
