Media notes
Releasing BCHU after banding
Observation details
Bird continuing from last night at dusk. Many local observers viewed the bird throughout the day. Tail pumping was almost immediately noticed when the bird flew in to the feeder, providing support for the tentative ID of BCHU. The photos from the previous night were compelling enough to schedule banding for the morning, which did take place. Bill measurement of 19.8mm was outside of the range for RTHU. Bill also showed decurve, but perhaps not enough to be conclusive by itself. P10 was more blunt/club-like than RTHU would show. The photos, videos and measurements were carefully considered by Wayne Laubscher (who banded the bird) and Scott Weidensaul, and they announced the following morning that they were confident that the ID of BCHU was correct.
