Female/immature Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Santa Maria, CA
Observation details
A female/Immature Rose-breasted Grosbeak made a brief appearance at the seed dish in the yard. Once I spotted the bird I quickly grabbed the camera for a couple of photos. The bird was easily spooked and flew off before I could see it well. It was initially identified as Black-headed Grosbeak since I did not see the bird through binoculars, but review of my photos indicate it is a likely Rose-breasted since the bird appears to show a pink upper mandible and the breast streaking at the center of the breast where visible in one profile photo, and along the flanks appears thicker in shape than that of a female/immature Black-headed Grosbeak. The bird was larger than the White-crowned Sparrows it was with at the seed dish. It had a white supercilium and blackish-brown lateral crown stripe. The auriculars were brown thinly bordered in black, especially at the rear or back of the head. The breast and sides were whitish with a buffy color at the sides of the breast and along the flanks. It also showed a small yellow spot just below the bend of the wing. Total viewing time was approx. 30 seconds before it flew off
