Media notes
Calls of apparent Winter Wren recorded by Curtis A. Marantz on 18 December 2021 in San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County, California. Recording was take from video clip recorded after bird began calling after "spishing" to attract an aggregation of birdsin the riparian corridor along San Luis Creek. Recording was extracted from video file, edited using Aduacity, high-pass filtered at 100 Hz, and normalized to -3 dB.
Observation details
I heard from the railroad bridge over San Luis Creek off the north end of Pacific Avenue doubled "chimp" calls that sounded deeper and not as sharp as those of Pacific Wren, and although I managed to take a short video that included these calls, I am not sure if the recording is of sufficient quality to be diagnostic. I thought these calls sounded better for Winter Wren than Pacific Wren, but I did not hear this call exceptionally well because the bird did not call for an extended period of time and it was not in view (or even exceptionally close) when I heard these calls. With some effort, I managed to see this bird briefly, when I noted that it was a notably small wren with a plump body, a large head, and a short tail that was held upward. I think I also saw a slim and relatively short bill, but I did not see this overly well. I also noted at this time that the bird's overall coloration was dark brown, seemingly not all that reddish, and with dark barring on the wings, flanks, and maybe also the back. I did not see the wings well enough to note the color of the barring, and even though I saw a paler supercilium, I had a hard time seeing its precise coloration. Moreover, I never clearly saw the throat, or really even the breast. In short, I saw a bird that was consistent with either a Pacific Wren or a Winter Wren, but it was certainly not a House Wren.
