Observation details
I observed this bird coming in for a landing with a group of Ring-billed Gulls. The Iceland Gull was slightly larger and longer, with a broader wingspan. The pale wingtips were highly visible in flight, and were a shade of white, with no black present, which immediately set it apart. In comparison, it was somewhat smaller than the Herring Gulls in the flock. The eye and tip of bill appeared black, while there was something of a very dark gray, but not quite black, tone to the base of the bill, giving it an all dark, almost all black appearance, depending on the angle it was viewed from. The bird’s legs had a pinkish tone. Overall the bird looked like varying shades of muddy or dirty ivory. Primaries were a pale with whiteish tips. Head, body, and nape were pale and whitish mottled with paler, brownish tones. Tertials were white white, mottled with a slightly darker tones than the body.
