Observation details
Initially IDed as Steppe Buzzard B.b.vulpinus & reidentified by Ganpule (2023) as a Himalayan Buzzard B. refectus. According to the review published in Indian Birds vol.19(5) on the status of Himalayan Buzzard distribution & identification in India, the "Distinct moustachial stripe, thinly streaked breast and contrasting dark brown belly band; barring on outer primaries and narrow dark trailing edge to wing and tail band" are more in line with an adult Himalayan. Munish & I encountered this bird while on one of the bends while heading up to the Nandi peak, in the same area that I'd seen possibly the same individual last year. Spotted perched on a tree and later flew right overhead, allowing superb close views and pictures. Reference: Ganpule, P., 2023.
