Franklin's gull surrounded by bugs at the sewage treatment plant. 1st winter bird
Observation details
Originally located by Ronnie DiLorenzo this morning, At about 3pm I relocated the bird mixed in with a number of ring-billed gulls in the recreation field adjacent to the Newburgh boat launch. No sooner did I see it then it disappeared again. I relocated it a second time at about 4:10pm foraging with many RBGU in the concrete treatment "pools" at the back of the sewage treatment plant, which is between the recreation field and the Newburgh Rowing Club. I was able to watch it for a short time before all the gulls picked up and flew into the river. Considerably smaller than the ring-billed gulls, extensive hood with eye crescents, small all-black bill, dark legs with hint of red at the tops. Identified as 1st winter bird by John Haas. Photos.
