Observation details
scarce or rare in the county, but likely regular here and and other islands in the harbor. two feeding together, giving amazing views in perfect light, showing bright yellow-orange legs, dark bill with reddish base decurved at tip, overall dark grayish/navy blue plumage above with paler belly and some indistinct streaking on the flanks, feathers in mantle and wing coverts showing legitimate iridescence with distinct purple sheen to the center of the feathers. absolutely a blast to watch as they fed on the lowest rocks of the shoreline at the southwest corner of the island by Picnic Point, often getting battered by waves and not caring at all, even floating up a few inches in some waves to slightly higher points on the rocks. county lifer for both of us, and county yearbird #238 for DA, who is now the sole holder of the New York County Big Year record according to eBird!
