Media notes
The Common Eider is in the center, to the left of the only Mallard drake showing its speculum. To the right of the eider is a female Mallard for comparison. This is a heavily cropped photo taken with a Coolpix 1000 at the equivalent of 3000 mm.
Observation details
For much of the time we watched a sleeping eider (see photo), but there were times when it was swimming amongst the Mallards, and also a time where it was looking around while on the island in the spot where it otherwise was sleeping. Thanks to others who shared 60x views of the bird through their spotting scopes!
