Observation details
female first seen on the ice downstream of the dam on Dec. 7; however, poor look and not sure of ID. Seen again on Dec. 9 on the ice at the edge of a small area of open water at Melville Beach. The bird was loafing with its head tucked under it's wing. As I approached the bird flew and I managed to get some photos of the bird in flight. The steep forehead, relatively small bill and limited white on the wing (Bellrose 1976) indicated Barrow's Goldeneye. Of interest was that the bird was seen both times by itself and did not interact with other Common Goldeneye that were nearby.
