Observation details
Small dark duck initially spotted swimming adjacent to a much larger Common Loon. First thought to be a female Bufflehead when viewed through binoculars. However, closer inspection through spotting scope revealed additional features indicating a female or juvenile Harlequin Duck. Rear white head spot small and distinct. Two discernable white patches near the bill typical of the facial pattern of a HADU. Small bill. Steep forehead and rounded head. Seen outside the mouth of the jetty at North Beach, HBSP. Heavily cropped photographs to follow.
