Observation details
Mega taxon. 1st winter, juvenile-like plumage, slaty primaries, and dark bill. While dogs and walkers frequently and readily flushed everything else on the beach, this gull refused to even acknowledge them and just continued feeding. I wasn’t able to observe it in flight, but have a few pics partially showing outer primary pattern - pale inner webs on topside, uniformly pale on underside. Folded primaries show white edging to tips. I showed the bird to Brendan Burke, who stayed with it while I left to retrieve spare batteries (bad move). During my absence it was joined by a glaucous gull; Brendan noted that those two were the last to leave after a peregrine did its thing. I came back to a gull-less beach, and it remained so. After doing more reading at home I realized that Ryan Schain had seen this individual a week ago.
